Crampons where mixted terrain and rock are encountered, such as for glacier crossings and couloirs, are usually made of steel and have 10 or 12 points. Walking crampons have shorter points and 10 points. Classic mountaineering and ice climbing use is usually a 12-point crampon.
Advanced crampons technical differnces for types of terrain and styles of steep climbing. There are crampons often feature interchangeable front points and crampons that can quickly convert into mono-points depending on the ice or type of mixed or dry climbing. These models for more extreme and steeper terrain feature longer, sharper front points and stiffer chassis that have to be used with stiffer mountaineering boots with a metal or carbon shank.
