The Merrell story began in 1981 when Clark Matis and John Schweitzer left their executive positions at the Rossignol Ski Company and joined forces with Randy J Merrell, who was a maker of custom boots, to develop an affordable high-performance hiking boot. The first Merrell boot wa launched in 1983 and was proclaimed “the most comfortable and functional boots in North America” by Backpacker Magazine. A women’s last especially designed for women’s feet, which are significantly different to men’s in bone structure and stride, was developed so that women could also benefit from Merrell’s comfortable, performance boots.
